Today’s post pulls back the curtain on the not-so-helpful Instagram experts we’ve all encountered. Learn how to protect your mental space, trust your judgment, and confidently embrace the messy beauty of parenting and health.
You’ve been there: scrolling through Instagram, looking for a spark of inspiration or maybe just trying to distract yourself after a long day. Then bam! You stumble across that influencer—maybe a “diet coach” with the perfect body or a parenting guru with their beautifully scripted advice—and suddenly, the subtle doubts creep in.
“Am I doing enough?”
“Why don’t I have it all figured out like she does?”
“Maybe I need her guidance to get it together.”
Sound familiar? Same, friend. But lately, I’ve had a hard realization: Some of the loudest voices on social media aren’t helping us—they’re making us feel worse. Whether it’s the untrained weight-loss “expert” doling out toxic advice or the Insta-famous parenting psychologist whose tips leave you second-guessing your instincts, there’s a fine line between empowerment and pressure.
And that’s where I draw the line.
In today’s post, I’m diving deep into why I’m unfollowing these so-called “social media experts,” how their tactics harm more than they help, and why it’s time to reclaim our confidence as moms, women, and, well, humans. If you’re exhausted by comparison culture or looking for a sign to detox your feed, stick with me—this might just be the reality check you didn’t know you needed.
Let’s get into it!
Table of Contents
Hey there, let’s dive into a spicy topic today — one that had me clutching my metaphorical pearls and unraveling at the dinner table. You know when something gets under your skin and you just can’t keep it in? Yep, that’s me. No poker face, no chill.
A few weeks ago, I was having dinner with two other couples, so naturally, the guys headed to one end of the table to talk about whatever guys talk about (sports? engines? the mystery remains). Meanwhile, the other moms and I got into the real conversations — the kind where 10 hours wouldn’t feel like enough.
The “Instagram Experts” Who Drive Me Up The Wall
I have no idea how we landed on the topic of weight loss, but suddenly, we were debating the credentials of a local Instagram-famous “diet coach” one of the girls follows. BIG mistake. She didn’t realize she was lighting the match for the rant about to explode out of me.
- First off, this so-called coach? Zero qualifications. Not certified, not trained — literally just loud with an Instagram handle that’s offensively negative.
- Second, she thrives on making people feel like garbage about themselves. Her whole approach is “you’re broken, but I have the (overpriced) secret to fixing you.” Spoiler: I know people who’ve worked with her, and guess how much weight they’ve lost? Zero.
Sure, this coach might sound specific to my local bubble here in New Orleans, but you know this type. Every platform has one — the loud, unqualified “expert” who uses shame like it’s a marketing strategy.
When Parenting “Experts” Rub Me the Wrong Way
After my anti-diet-coach tirade, one of the moms innocently asked my opinion about a very popular Instagram psychologist who doles out “perfect” parenting advice. Cue me spiraling again.
Here’s my beef about parenting advice on Instagram:
- Overly scripted advice takes away YOUR power as a parent. Imagine you’re mid-meltdown with your kid and instead of instinctively responding, you’re desperately trying to recall what that “expert” said to do. Is it really helping you, or is it stressing you out more?
- It breeds guilt and uncertainty. These influencers don’t live in your house, deal with your kids, or navigate your exact challenges. Their advice can sometimes feel like just another way of saying, “You’re failing, but I’m here to save you!”
The truth is, no one knows your children better than you do. We have unique connections that no Instagram-famous figure can replicate. Yes, parenting is tough, but no perfectly worded Instagram caption is going to replace your natural instincts.
Why We Need to Be Selective About Who We Listen To
Health conversations, parenting tips, life in general — it’s easy to get swept up in wanting the “easy button.” Someone promises to make it all better for you, and suddenly, you’re hanging on their every word. But let me stop you right there.
Ask yourself this:
- Does this person’s advice relieve mental stress for me or make it worse?
- Is their energy uplifting me or weighing me down?
Notice how even just following certain people on social media starts impacting your mood. If seeing their content doesn’t feel good or it leaves you questioning your worth as a mom or person, it’s time to hit…
UNFOLLOW.
We’ve all got enough stress without some wannabe guru’s negativity leaking into our lives. You deserve support and empowerment, not more noise and shame.
My (Non-Expert) Take on Health and Parenting
Since I’ve scolded the so-called experts, here’s my high-level, non-professional take on these two hot topics:
- Health: Follow the 80/20 rule. Eat mostly healthy, drink water, move your body, and commit to good sleep whenever possible. Add grace to the mix because life happens — no need for extremes.
- Parenting: Talk to your friends and remind yourself you’re not alone in this journey. Give yourself and your kids grace because, remember, their little prefrontal cortexes aren’t even fully developed yet. You’re not dealing with rational creatures. It’s okay, you’ve got this.
Take Back Your Power, Mama
Here’s the thing: None of us are perfect. None of us have all the answers. And guess what? Neither do the “experts.” The loud voices on Instagram yelling that they do? They’re selling you something, not listening to your needs.
You know yourself and your kids better than anyone. Lean into that natural wisdom; it’s worth so much more than memorized tips from someone else’s feed.
So here’s your homework:
Unfollow anyone who makes you feel like sh*t. Seriously, go do it now. Your mental health and stress levels will thank you.
